The Story of Amakusa Shuzo

Founded in 1899, Amakusa Shuzo is the only shochu distillery on the beautiful Amakusa Islands in Kumamoto, Japan. For generations, the distillery has remained deeply connected to the land, using locally grown rice and sweet potatoes, spring water and traditional techniques to create authentic handcrafted shochu.

With much of the production still carried out by hand, Amakusa Shuzo embraces a slower, more personal approach to distilling. Their renowned Ikenotsuyu shochu captures the character of the islands — rich, earthy and full of depth.
