Matsuzaki Shuzo – Quietly Exceptional

Founded in 1892 in Tenei Village, Fukushima, Matsuzaki Shuzo has remained closely connected to one of the region’s great rice-growing areas. Its flagship Hirotogawa takes its name from the river that flows through the village, reflecting a sake deeply rooted in its local landscape.

Today, the brewery is led by sixth-generation Toji Hiroyuki Matsuzaki, who took over the brewing in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake. His approach is not about chasing dramatic change, but about continuously refining what matters — adjusting each year to the character of the rice, the climate and the brewing process.

Using Fukushima-grown sake rice, including Yumenokaori, and well water from the brewery grounds, Matsuzaki aims for sake that is understated, balanced and consistently excellent. Hirotogawa is made to complement food and to be enjoyed again and again.
