Toyonaga Distillery – The Terroir of Kuma
Founded in 1894 in Yunomae, Kumamoto, Toyonaga Distillery has been making rice shochu at the heart of the Kuma region for more than 130 years.
From the beginning, the distillery has maintained its own rice fields, believing that the character of shochu starts long before distillation. Since 1986, Toyonaga has taken this philosophy further through organic farming, working together with local farmers to cultivate the rice used in its spirits.
This deep connection to the land is at the heart of Toyonagakura, the distillery’s signature organic rice shochu. Made with organic Kuma rice and the pure water of the region, it expresses the natural sweetness and fragrance of the grain while remaining clean and elegant.
Toyonaga also explores the wider possibilities of Kuma Shochu, from roasted barley expressions to Japan’s first organic brown-rice shochu.
For Toyonaga, terroir is more than a concept. It is the rice, the water, the people — and the landscape of Kuma itself.
Organic by nature. Rooted in Kuma.
