Tenpai Shuzo – The Character of Barley

Founded in 1898 in Chikuzen, Fukuoka, Tenpai Shuzo has dedicated more than a century to one particular spirit: authentic Japanese barley shochu.

Tenpai’s approach begins with the grain. Using 100% two-row barley from the fertile Chikushi Plain of Fukuoka and Saga, the brewery carefully polishes the barley before fermentation. Their defining technique is Tenpai-style atmospheric double distillation, designed to refine the spirit while preserving the rich character and natural flavour of the barley.

Rather than relying on filtration or processing to create a neutral spirit, Tenpai focuses on raw materials, fermentation and distillation to achieve balance, depth and clarity. The result is a barley shochu with pronounced grain character and a natural richness that develops beautifully with ageing.

Five generations of the Tada family have continued to explore what barley shochu can become — always with the same belief that great spirits begin with great ingredients.

One grain. Two distillations. A world of character.
